Today on The Local Project, we explore the textural sensory journey created, encouraging the architecture to be physically read, not just visually interpreted.

The Chambers House by @shaunlockyer Architects is the restoration of a raw, crafted, modernist building which presented a number of practical and deterioration challenges to overcome. 🌴

First constructed in the 1970s, the house sits proudly alongside the timber Queenslander-style homes of Teneriffe and New Farm. Raw, concrete blockwork and local Brisbane β€˜tuff’ stonework are juxtaposed with blackened timbers and light oak interiors to create a modest yet striking palette of materials.
The outcome respects the past and breathes new life into a much-loved Brisbane icon.

Purposefully lo-fi, the Balnarring Retreat by Branch Studio Architects embraces a low-tech aesthetic towards the operation of the building itself, fully embodying the idea of retreat and slowing down. 🌿

Celebrating craftsmanship and integrity of materiality instead of technology, every wall of the building have been designed to contain components that manually fold, open and close to manipulate the space and transform the program of the building.

The @tonguengrooveau Series - Engaged to design the interiors for a new residential home by CLP Architecture, @taylorpresslyarchitects drew on a play of form, texture and contrast to create an elegant and luxurious family home in which both interior design and architecture resonate in harmony. πŸ’

#TonguenGroove European oak floorboards were used throughout project, in which a highly distressed textural finish is hand-applied to the boards during the production process, imbuing them with a deeply textured surface that ensures the timber matches the rigour of the Oreo House’s strong interior materials palette, while simultaneously adding a natural warmth.

A playful and practical home, Rose Street Residence by @fieldwork_architects honours the history of the house by embracing, rather than erasing, its colourful past. 🌿

It is not every day that a brief requires transforming a working brothel into a home, but with the Rose Street Residence, this is precisely what Fieldwork Architects were asked to achieve. When the team at Fieldwork began the project, they decided to embrace, rather than erase, the former life of the building.
