La Mano Del Desierto is a beautiful piece of art made by Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal, of an 11 meters hand that stands above the desert and where the fingers seems to touch the stars. On this particular panorama made of 13 single shots, the whole hand seems to point to Eta Carinae nebula. A little bit to the left, and we can find the Southern Cross, which seems to point to South Pole. While on the left side of the hand, the Small and Large Magellanic clouds are visible immediately above the horizon, in the top left center of the image, is shinning the bright light of the giant planet Jupiter. Not far away, the red supergiant star Antares is also visible in orange hues. The central region of Milky Way is well visible as the faint yellow light on the left side of this starry landscape sceen, captured at about 70 km south of Antofagasta. The sculpture made of iron and concrete stands alone in the desert at an altitude of 1100 meters above the sea level.

A fish-eye fulldome view shows one of the iconics landmarks of Saint Petersburg, in Russia, the Orthodox Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, erected on the precise site where emperor Alexander II was fatally attacked. Featuring the largest collection of mosaics in Russia, during the war, the church had serious damages in the walls and a high-explosive bomb was stuck for a long period of about 20th years in one of the walls without being noticed and by miracle, without exploding. Even being captured in night time and under the street lights, it´s artistic beauty can not be hidden, like it was happening with most of the stars under the effect of light pollution. Only bright stars like Vega can be well visible from polluted skies, being the brightest path on the background sky, it represents the sideral motion of a star over the course of one hour, which is approximately 15º.

Captured under the twilight, this cityscape is showing paths of lights on the ground. Besides the street lights, they are the result of busy modern cities where light pollution is hidding the main wonders of the night sky. Above the lights, is visible one of the iconics landmarks from Russia, the Saint Basil’s Cathedral, an Orthodox colorful church, building “like the flame of a bonfire rising into the sky”. Not easy to spot at first sight, the crescent moon is very low on the horizon but yet visible from the Red Square. The answer to find it on this image, lies on the monument to Minin and Pozharsky. A bronze sculpture in front of the Saint Basil’s Cathedral which commemorates Prince Dmitry Pozharsky and the merchant Kuzma Minin, who gathered an entire Russian volunteer army to expell from Moscow, the forces under the command of King Sigismund III of Poland, in early 17th century.
*
Swipe Right: If you look carefully, Minin seems to be actually explaining to Dmitry, that the moon is setting behind the bushes from the Kremlin walls 🤩

A short time lapse sequence, shows a big window where we can enjoy the wonders of the night time while lying down in the bed. Before you fall asleep, instead of counting sheeps, you can try to count the dozens of satellites that are crossing our night skies each minute. Looking carefully to each square of the image, and you will notice them like thiny pixels flying fast! Give yourself a try.

With the Summer ending in Northern Hemisphere, it’s time to say goodbye to our Milky Way, at least to the brightest colorful dusty heart of our galaxy. For those of us who loves spending entire nights outside watching and enjoying the night sky, it can leads to a feeling of Nostalgia, but its just a matter of time regarding the natural motion of our planet orbiting the sun, and you know that you will get back again to this amazing views within six months. Although, if we not take care and face the increasing light pollution as a serious problem of nowadays, in a near future, a vision like that could be only achieved through a photograph of a remote reality, leading to a permanent lost of the night sky, as it has to be... beautiful starry and deeply dark!

A vertical panorama captured above Ojos Del Salar lagoon, reflects the main stars of the Southern Cross constellation. Above the rocky desert horizon, Eta Carinae nebula is visible in reddish hues while the entire colorful band of light from the Milky Way extends high up to the Zenith (not entirely seen in this cropped version for IG). The photo was captured at about 30km from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.

Featured today as NASA’s APOD @astronomypicturesdaily this annotated version reveals a wide deep sky field from the core region of our galaxy. Besides the background completely full of stars, we can easily recognize many well known deep sky objects, like emission, reflection and dark nebulae as well as some star clusters. The Galactic Center is identified on the right side of the 1st split image. Swipe right to see the 2nd half of panorama where shows the Cat’s Paw nebula, or the blue star pair Shaula and Lesath from the back of Scorpius constellation. From the center to the left, those objects are still visible in a middle latitudes from the Northern Hemisphere. Although, from the center to the right, they are mainly visible in the Southern Hemisphere. The image was captured from the desert, near La Serena, Chile. Technical details on my previous post.

Swipe right to see the entire panorama covering at about 20° across the Milky Way center.

A classic but hard image to get nowadays with the increasing number of buses with strong lights full of tourists, that arrive all the time under “the darkness” at La Mano Del Desierto. A beautiful piece of art made by Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal, of an 11 meters hand that stands above the desert and where the fingers seems to touch the stars. On this particular shot the whole hand seems to point to Eta Carinae nebula and above it, we can find the Southern Cross, which points to South Pole (left side of the image). While the hand ring finger seems to touch on Avior star, from Carina constellation, on the left side of the hand, the Small Magellanic cloud is shinning above the horizon. Located at about 70 km south of Antofagasta, the sculpture made of iron and concrete stands alone in the desert at an altitude of 1100 meters above the sea level

This unusual portrait is showing what could be a Big Martian Eye looking to our Milky Way Galaxy. Captured originally in landscape format, this mosaic was photographed from Ojos Del Salar, two small lagoons in the middle of nowhere located in Atacama Desert, 30km from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. The rocky desert sometimes reminds me the martian soil. Later I will share the landscape mosaic 🤩

Even in a remote desert we can find beautiful lonely trees, like this one which stands below the outstanding arch of Milky Way as seen from San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile! Who doesn’t like a pretty tree ?🌲😁🌍 I love trees and mountains...under daylight or nighttime✨🤩. At left, below the beginning of Milky Way is visible one of my favorites volcanos in the world, Licancabur, located near the border with Bolivia, has 5916 meters.

A vertical panorama of single frames features the core of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, full of bright emission nebulae visible in red/violet hues. Located high in the sky at this time of the year in the Southern Hemisphere, was framed above my hotel´s “hut” with a lovely view to an incredible starry sky, between the branches of some trees from a small village in Atacama Desert, called San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile. For those like me that are based in the Northern Hemisphere, a sky like that seems to be inverted, although, the bright light of Jupiter in the top center, helped to recognize the Dark River, dark absorption nebulas that extends from the central band of Milky Way, connecting the Pipe Nebula to the colourful region near bright star Antares, Rho Ophiuchi.

On an assignment for @esoastronomy in 2015, the photo reveals a panoramic view from VISTA telescope to the top of Cerro Paranal (at left) where it is located the VLT platform. In the right side we can see the Milky Way trying to show up behind a dark band of clouds, also covering the Moonset. The Very Large Telescope (VLT) is a telescope operated by the ESO – European Southern Observatory on Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The VLT is the world’s most advanced optical instrument, consisting of four Unit Telescopes with main mirrors of 8.2m diameter, which are generally used separately but can be used together to achieve very high angular resolution. The four separate optical telescopes are known as Antu, Kueyen, Melipal and Yepun, which are all words for astronomical objects in the Mapuche language, with optical elements that can combine them into an astronomical interferometer (VLTI), which is used to resolve small objects. The interferometer is complemented by four movable Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs) of 1.8 m aperture.

Moon Gate...another old shot taken 8 years ago in Vila Boim, Borba, Alentejo. A long startrail sequence shows the moon path during 4h, while moving against a starry background sky.

Its Raining Stars...yesterday Facebook reminded me of a very old picture I took 8 years ago on August, in a small Pine Forest in Fonte da Telha, Almada. Is a startrail sequence that also shows planet Jupiter trail on the low right corner of the photo.

Swipe right for an annotated version identifying the constellations in the background.

Following the galactic core of our Galaxy, a short time lapse sequence shows in background, the motion of Milky Way over San Pedro de Atacama. This was my hotel’s view, located in the outer limit of the village. Lights from the hotel were still illuminating the branches from those trees in the foreground. This sequence was captured on my first night during my long 2019 trip to Atacama Desert in Chile, with my lovely mate @apolonia_rodrigues

Back in 2015, a fish-eye “full dome” view of La Palma shows the Milky Way crossing the entire sky while the Green Laser from William Herschel Telescope (WHT) is pointed to the Zenith. In the opposite direction, is visible the dome of Isaac Newton Telescope (INT). The image was captured in the rocky mountain of Roque de Los Muchachos, in La Palma Canary island. The CANARY laser guide star, is in use at the WHT during a few nights per semester, so this was a rare opportunity to capture it.
