The Grande Dixence Dam in the canton of Valais in Switzerland is the tallest gravity dam in the world with a height of 935 feet (285 m). A gravity dam resists the horizontal thrust of the contained water, in this case the Dixence River, entirely by its own weight. The Grand Dixence took 14 years to construct, contains approximately six million cubic meters of concrete, and generates power for more than 400,000 Swiss homes. /// Created by @dailyoverview, source imagery: @maxartechnologies

When I launched Daily Overview six years ago, I did so with the stated mission to inspire the Overview Effect for as many people as possible. This is the idea that still inspires our team every day. If we see the planet from this perspective, we are able to better understand the big picture, and are more likely to be better informed and appreciate our one and only home.

A lot has happened in the last six years. So much that the name and website that we launched with in 2013 no longer captures all that what we’re up to. Today we’re excited to announce a new brand — Overview — and website. When you visit www.over-view.com (link in bio) you’ll find a revamped space to discover our imagery with new interactive features such as our Map and Index of our entire library. The Daily post isn’t going anywhere and will always be a part of the stories we tell.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this project over the years. Everything we’ve created has been made possible because you’ve followed along, purchased a book or print, or simply spread the word of what we do. We hope this new platform gives us the ability to continue to share this perspective about what is taking place on our planet. We’re excited to have you here for this next chapter.

Sincerely,
@benjaminrgrant

Coal trains — some full, others empty — idle in a railyard next to a pivot irrigation circle in Alliance, Nebraska, USA. The city is located in the Powder River Basin — one of the world’s largest coal-mining areas — and serves as a stopping point for trains en route to power plants in the Midwest and Southern parts of the country. /// Created by @benjaminrgrant, source imagery @maxartechnologies

Seafood farms cover the surface of Luoyuan Bay in the Fujian province of China. Underneath the water is a vast network of lines, cages, and nets for the growth of various seafood species including crabs, lobsters, scallops, and carp. For a sense of scale, approximately 2.3 square miles (6 square km) of the bay is seen here. /// Created by @dailyoverview, source imagery: @maxartechnologies

Lava and ash billow out of Raung, one of the most active volcanoes on the island of Java in Indonesia. Raung towers more than 10,000 feet above sea level and was captured here during a powerful eruption in 2015 with a short-wave infrared satellite camera. The ash produced during this activity forced the closure of numerous airports on the island. /// Created by @benjaminrgrant, source imagery @maxartechnologies
