Notting Hill, a neighborhood in London, England Photo credit: @nononcurlybaker . Notting Hill, a district in West London, within the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, is known for being a cosmopolitan and multicultural neighborhood, hosting the annual Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street festival, and Portobello Road Market, one of London's best known markets, selling antiques and vintage fashion. Today Notting Hill may be one of the trendiest neighborhoods to live in London, but no less than 50 years ago the area was a massive slum, and was considered to be a “no-go-zone” among London locals. It has taken many guises over the decades, from brickmaking in the 1800s through prosperity in the Victorian era, slum housing in the mid-twentieth century and migration from the Caribbean. In the early 21st century, after decades of gentrification, Notting Hill has a reputation as an affluent and fashionable area known for attractive terraces of large Victorian townhouses and high-end shopping and restaurants. With iconic pastel-coloured houses standing in immaculate rows on cherry blossom-lined streets, Notting Hill is a vibrant, trendy area. The neighborhood’s cobblestoned streets weave through scrunched alleyways and richly furnished Victorian townhomes.
