3.In 1989 Mary Kay πŸ’‹ started a comprehensive corporate recycling program, one of the first corporations to do so.
4.In 1990 we introduced green packaging, including refillable compacts. Today, our products are shipped using biodegradable peanuts and environmental sustainability is a critical element in our manufacturing and supply chain process.
5. In 1991 Mary Kay πŸ’‹ won Environmental Excellence Award from EPA Region 6.
6.In 1993 Mary Kay πŸ’‹ received the first Fashion and Environment Award from UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme.
7.Earth Day 2000 focused on global warming and clean energy. It used ancient (talking drums) and modern technology (the Internet) to reach global citizens. 5,000 environmental groups in 184 countries took part in Earth Day 2000; the global audience was estimated in the hundreds of millions.
8. In 2011 Mary Kay Global manufacturing in Dallas achieved zero-landfill status, meaning most months we send absolutely ZERO to the landfill.
19. Mary Kay Ash said, β€œI feel very strongly that we must do everything in our power to save our planet, or our grandchildren will not have a place to live. Let me emphasize that Mary Kay Cosmetics is an environmental leader because we strongly feel it is the right thing to do”.

I'm hearing more and more from my #ecology and #biology undergrads that they feel lost coming up on graduation. They want to help save our #earth, but the more they learn about the scale of our problems in school, the more helpless they feel. Can they make a difference as one person?
As an #ecologist, I often try to frame my work in the big picture understanding of how our world is changing. BUT the BIGGEST impact I have is probably not through the science I am doing. It is through the conversations I have with city managers who partner in my work. It is through talks with our community members about the many positive impacts of restoration as we work together in our city parks. This past weekend, we created a pollinator garden, filled in willow habitat, and cut back a dominating invasive species. These kids were damn PROUD of those plants they put in the ground and vowed to come back to see how they and their pollinators were doing.
There is no federal law requiring habitat conservation in our local parks. There is no federal ban on plastic bags, or requirement to recycle. But look at the momentum we have achieved! Sometimes policy does guide big changes for the earth, but MUCH more often these movements start in towns, by individuals, by conversations. Behavioral changes happen at these small scale and THEN grow.
So I tell my students HELLYES one person can make a difference!
Start a conversation, make a small change, and watch it grow. And tell your friends HAPPY EARTH DAY!!! #earthday #iloveearth
