We are excited to announce that The Pines project has been nominated for a Dulux Colour Award! A complex project we tackled with @desseinparke to redesign an existing 1960’s apartment. We introduced a continuous dado and used soft yet distinct colours to create a classic and sophisticated interior. ⁣

Some great news to start the week: our recently completed Giraffe Early Learning Centre – the adaptive reuse of a disused state-heritage listed electricity substation on Sydney’s Northern Beaches – has been shortlisted for the Dulux Colour Awards 2019. We’re honoured to be considered for this award and congratulate all shortlisted entries (and aren’t quite sure our shortlisting wasn’t a mistake or email typo…)! Over the comings weeks we’ll be featuring more content of the project, but here are some of the first snaps showing how colour is used throughout the project to create links to the heritage building, the suburban context, and internally to create a range of spatial feelings for the child care environment. Featuring ‘millennial pink’ ductwork (what else) and a range of bold colours employed diagrammatically to make clear planning and spatial logics, we use colour in our projects purposefully. While sometimes making it harder to photograph, we feel colour is an important part of the contemporary architect’s toolset and that we need to broaden our understanding of how it relates to children’s educational growth, Australian light and more broadly, how it can be employed as a tool of contemporary Australian architecture.

Look forward to sharing more photos of the project with you shortly – after 3 years it’s been a mammoth effort for our first major project. Photographs are taken by the talented Adam Guy Madian @adammadigan
