Ida Lorentzen, Interiors, 2000s
.
"Light is the life of the painting. The room is where life exists. We build our rooms and light gives them life."
.
The paintings and pastels of Norwegian artist Ida Lorentzen seem absorved on depicting how natural light that gets inside through a window then leaks from one room to the next through open doors and voids in the walls. The spaces do not show any trace of domesticity beyond their proportions, scale, and the occasional stack of pieces of furniture that create abstract still-lifes.

Gregor Sailer, Carson City VI/Vårgårda, Sweden, 2016
.
For “The Potemkin Village” series, photographer Gregor Sailer has travelled around the world to capture urban complexes devoid of human life. They have been built as military sites for training soldiers, as replicas of European villages in the outskirts of China that are now emptied out because of speculation, or, as is the case in these pictures, as fake streets for car-testing purposes in a small town in Sweden.
.
In this imagined replica of a nondescript village, around 1000 simulations are realized every year involving hazardous traffic situations and the vehicles’ response to them.
.
Built in the manner of a western film scenography, the houses are all façade and no interior. Sailer’s photographs show the trick, but also an intention of representation that goes beyond mere functionality. Was it necessary to build the pitched roofs? To define windows and doors? To paint every house in a distinct pastel colour?

Adolf Seel, Sultan at the patio of los Arrayanes, Alhambra, 1870s
.
During the 1860s and 1870s, German painter Adolf Seel travelled extensively throughout the south of Europe and Northern Africa, where he became enthralled with Arabic and Moorish architecture. In his paintings of the palace of Alhambra, Seel combines the grandiosity of the architecture of its rooms and courtyards with small domestic moments of imagined past inhabitants.
.
After a few centuries of decay and the almost fatal Napoleonic occupation, which destroyed part of the palace, around the 1850s the general opinion started to advocate for the preservation of the buildings and gardens of the Alhambra for its historical and artistic value. In 1870, the ensemble was declared a “National Monument”, and so these works by Seel, painted in the early 1870s, are part of a particular moment in its history: that in which the Alhambra goes from being a ruin on a mountain to being one of the most visited monuments in the world.

Éric Rohmer, L’ami de mon amie, 1987
.
For the last instalment of his series of films "Comédies et proverbs", Rohmer returns to Cergy-Pontoise, the ville nouvelle he had portrayed in the documentary Enfance d’une ville (1975). Twelve years later he sets the action of his new film in its public buildings, its private spaces, and its central park. Its young inhabitants study, work, and live there. They go up to the lake for water sports and meet each other in the café in the city’s main square, although they don’t quite agree on which one of the squares is actually the main one. The city and its architecture become a stage that provides an atmosphere of its own.
.
Blanche, the main character, lives in Ricardo Bofill’s monumental Belvédère Saint-Christophe, the newly finished housing building. In the moment of filming, the grass is still not planted and some of its apartments remain unoccupied. Her newly acquainted friend Léa already has a strong opinion about it, as can be seen in a conversation they have about it:
.
L: Where do you live?
B: In Saint-Christophe, in the Belvédère
L: Ah, in that huge thing?
B: Yes
L: Do you like it there?
B: Yes, a lot
L: I don’t like it, it looks like a military quarter.
B: I would say more like a palace
L: A palace in the outside… but inside?
B: Have you visited it?
L: No. But I imagine it.
B: Well no. You are very isolated from the neighbours, more than you would in smaller houses. I talk like a prospect! You feel like in a grand hotel, it’s reassuring
L: Of course, if you don’t stay

Margarethe Fröhlich, Siedlungen Interiors, 1933-39
.
Artist Margarethe Fröhlich first became interested in architecture when she moved to Frankfurt in 1929 and witnessed the construction of the “Neues Frankfurt”, a major public housing project by architect Ernst May (in which Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky also collaborated with her revolutionary rethinking of the modern kitchen).
.
Fröhlich went on to study architecture with Franz Schuster, focusing on architecture for “society’s less advantaged”, and moved to Prague, where she became an interior designer for Siedlungen interiors. The axonometric drawings of her projects show detailed projects that maximise the use of the available space and create ambiences for the different functions through pattern and colour.
.
In 1939 she had to flee Prague to escape the Nazis and stopped by Poland and London before finally arriving to New York in 1941. There, she worked as a model maker for different architecture offices and taught at Columbia University, before finally becoming the headmaster of the Waldorf School in 1950.

Yann Kebbi, Illustrations, 2010s
.
Yann Kebbi’s vast production of work includes commissions from highly regarded publications, books, and sketches of most everywhere he goes.
.
While his notebook sketches portray intimate observations of everyday life; his larger scale, often-commissioned illustrations broaden the scope to contain whole buildings and parts of the city, and all of the lives in them. They show the complexities of contemporary society in the form of juxtaposed types and styles, and express humour, sadness, joy, and contradiction, sometimes all at once.

Michael Asher, Kunsthalle Bern, 1992
.
Michael Asher’s site-specific interventions interact with their surroundings disrupting the inherent spatial and logical perceptions of their setting. In his work for Kunsthalle Bern, Asher puts the museum’s heating system in the spotlight, as he repositions all of the museum’s radiators to the building’s foyer.
.
The result is a sculptural arrangement from which a network of dozens of pipes emerge. The tubes are led to their original location through the different rooms, traversing walls and stairwells, reconnecting with the existing installation and enclosing the system.
.
Beyond the conceptual disruption of the context in which it operates, and the sophisticated composition of its system, the installation operates in terms of climatic comfort as well. The foyer becomes an overheated space, the hearth of the building, and radiates heat into its immediate surroundings. But as one walks away, the exhibition rooms that had been until recently comfortable and well-adjusted become colder and colder.

Franz Erhard Walther, Versammlung (Gathering), 1966
.
“Franz Erhard Walther is internationally recognized for his five-decade-long investigation into the spatial, sensorial, and temporal dimensions of forms-preoccupations he shares with such contemporaries as Donald Judd, Walter de Maria, Richard Serra, and Blinky Palermo. Since his first experiments during the early 1960s, Walther’s work has occupied a unique position in the development of post-World War II avant-garde practice, as he radically abandoned conventional modes of painting and sculpture in order to examine the process of art rather than its product. Walther’s distinctive approach to thinking through the problems visual artists traditionally face –those of form, materials, space, and subject- led him to conceiving objects and images that challenged the beholder to act. In acknowledging the impact of viewers’ presence and actions in real time and space, Walther attempts to suspend the sense of isolation and self-absorption that is often associated with viewing art.”
.

Hvězda Summer Palace, 1555-1558
.
Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol founded the construction of this summer retreat in 1555, to be used as either/both a hunting lodge and a philosophers’ retreat. The architect who traced the plans for the building remains unknown, but the fact that Ferdinand belonged to a group of intellectuals influenced by Hermeticism, which placed great importance on numerology and proportion, is acknowledged as the reason behind the six-point star geometry of its floorplan.
.
Vitruvius, of whom Ferdinand owned his translated works, wrote:
.
“The mathematicians, however, maintaining a different view, have said that the perfect number is six, because this number is composed of integral parts which are suited numerically to their method of reckoning: thus, one is one sixth; two is one third; three is one half; four is two thirds; five is five sixths; and six is the perfect number.”

Pierre Bergian, Interiors, 2010s
.
Belgian artist Pierre Bergian’s paintings of rooms show noble but almost deserted spaces. Often soaked in saturated shades of blue light, the rooms appear elegantly proportioned, with high ceilings and ornamented walls.
.
Bergian studied Art History and Archaeology, and was always fascinated with architecture. Large depictions of classical buildings are sometimes painted on top of those walls, adding one more layer into a surreal atmosphere of grand decay.

Giotto di Bondone, The Legend of St Francis, 1297-1300
.
Dream of Innocent III /// Dream of the Palace
.
Giotto is acknowledged with introducing spatial dimension and realistic human expression to his portrayals of religious scenes, departing from the Byzantine tradition and setting the path towards the Italian Renaissance. For the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, he painted 28 frescoes of moments in the life and posterior myth of St. Francis.
.
A fantastic architecture of temples, towers and verandas painted in bright colours provide the stage in which the scenes happen, ranging from the humbleness and predicaments of the saint’s life to oneiric and almost surrealist apparitions and visions, such as those included here.

THE ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT IN THE AGE OF VIRAL SHARING ————————————————————————
The first issue of Malapartecafé is titled The Architectural Project in the Age of Viral Sharing.
Social Media are changing our lives making public what once was private. How is it affecting architecture?
We consciously claim that time has come for us to deal and discuss about social media and raise awareness on their powerful influence in our professions, from architectural planning to architectural theory.
We will bring up this matter to this magazine, with a continuous stream of interviews, contributions, calls, etc. ...
And what a better way to do it right on instagram?

Archizoom Associates, No-Stop City, 1969-72
.
Archizoom conceived No-Stop City as a theoretical project that reimagined urban fabric as a shapeless and non-figurative continuum created by a structural grid placed over the natural landscape. They defined it as a city without architecture, a “wandering fog bank”.
.
Over the years, Archizoom formalized the project in different ways, adapting the core principles of its theory to different purposes, thus producing a myriad of proposals and an immense quantity of graphical documentation, going from conceptual diagrams to highly detailed models.
.
Founding member of Archizoom Andrea Branzi later wrote:
.
“No-Stop City proposed a totally de-dramatized vision of history, restored to its lay dimensions, and completely devoid of metaphysics. An extreme vision of industrial civilization as the producer of a decorative-repetitive and horizontal system, and one thus devoid of cathedrals. A system based on the repetition of signs, at once diffuse and fluid, within which architecture and nature, like so many exceptions and incidents, dissolved and disappeared into the amniotic space of metropolises.”

Nayarit House Models, 200 BC to 300 AD
.
Precolumbian clay models of houses found in the Nayarit area in western Mexico depict lively scenes in a domestic setting. Probably intended as part of funerary assemblages, these sculptures were not modelled to be scale replicas of the buildings they described, but rather representations of the life and rituals of the communities that inhabited them. In spite of their lack of “adequate” proportions, the models’ detailing offers a source of technical knowledge on the construction of the domestic architecture of the time (one that no longer exists): the types of roof line, the organization of the spaces or the decoration on the walls.

Jean DuBreuil, La perspective practique, 1642
.
Jean DuBreuil’s essay, published in 1642, combined the mathematician’s rational methodology and the architect’s graphical approach to produce a comprehensive explanation on “The Practice of Perspective”. Each double page included a written description on the rules of the construction of a space in the right and an engraving with the resulting image on the left.
.
The synopsis of the book included the following statement:
.
“The Practice of Perspective:
or, An Easy METHOD
Of Representing NATURAL OBJECTS
According to the Rules of ART.
Applied and Exemplified in all the Variety of Cases; as
LANDSKIPS, GARDENS, BUILDINGS OF divers Kinds,
Their Appendages, Parts, Furniture, &c.
With RULES for the proportions, Positions, &c. of FIGURES
Both in Draught and Relievo.
Also the Manner of conducting the Shadows by divers Luminaires: and Practical
Methods of Designing truly, without understanding any Rules at all.
A WORK highly necessary for
PAINTERS,
Engravers, Statuaries, Architects, Jewellers, Embroiderers, Tapestry-Workers,
and others concerned in Designing.”

Jean-Luc Godard, Le mépris, 1963
.
For the final act of “Le mépris”, Godard transports the action of the film from Rome to Capri. The five main characters (a French writer, his discontented wife, an American producer, a translator, and director Fritz Lang playing himself) go around the interior and exterior spaces of casa Malaparte, and share one last scene all together in the living room, sitting in sofas the same blue as that of the sea that is seen from the huge windows framing the rocky coast of the island.

Shaikh-Zada, Miniatures for an edition of Nizami’s Khamsa (Quintet), ca. 1524-25
.
In the twelfth century, poet Nizami Ganjavi wrote five epic poems that were assembled into one volume after his death. The Khamsa (Quintet) was an influential work in Islamic literature, and richly illustrated manuscripts were commissioned by the most powerful rulers of the time.
.
This edition produced between 1524 and 1525 in the city of Herat, illustrated by Shaikh Zada, has been said to be “one of the most sumptuous manuscripts ever produced in Persia”. Its depictions of the architecture settings where the poems take place are particularly detailed, with special emphasis put in the fourth poem, Haft Paykar (Seven Portraits): the story of a week in the life of Iranian monarch Bahram Gur, who spends each of the seven days of the week in one of his seven palaces (each one in a different colour), along one of his seven wives, each a princess of one of the seven regions of the world.
.
Whereas normally this story would have only one illustration, there are in this edition seven full-page illustrations depicting each one of the seven ornamented palaces. Written verses on its architecture reference the colour of each of them. Even if Bahram Gur lived in the 400s and the poem dates back to the 12th century, the illustrations portray the architecture and objects that would have been found in 16th century Iran, at the beginning of the Safavid dynasty.

The spaces do not show any trace of domesticity beyond their proportions, scale, and the occasional stack of pieces of furniture that create abstract still-lifes. .

Valentine Schlegel, Fireplaces, 1959-2002
.
Towards the late 1950s, as TV was increasingly becoming the centre of the household and technological advances were taking architecture towards the efficiency of modular repetition and the use of modern heating systems, artist and artisan Valentine Schlegel started sculpting fireplaces in white plaster over a structure of wire frame in the homes of friends and acquaintances. By then an accomplished ceramist, Schlegel first came to the idea of building fireplaces in order to create adequate spaces for her vases. In a documentary in 1962, she said:
.
“My first fireplace was built so I had a spot to lay my flower vase. A fireplace basically presents the same problem as a flower vase. The latter is built around a void, and a fireplace is built around a hollow. Once you’ve removed its traditional envelope, you are facing a black hearth, a hollow. What I tried to do around that hollow was to stretch out the walls and make them into shelves on which to set my vases and other objects, or make them into spaces to stock the wood, or make them into benches. What I love in this technique of extending and energizing walls is its built-in, integrated aspect that creates a whole with the rest of the house, which has an eternal side.”
.
From 1959 to 2002, Schlegel sculpted around 100 fireplaces. Her work remained relatively unknown CAC Brétigny honoured her in 2017 with an exhibition and catalogue/monograph that collected the research artist Hélène Bertin had been gathering for five years.

Gustave Caillebotte, Les raboteurs de parquet, 1875, 1876
.
One of the first representations of the urban worker, Caillebotte’s original “Floor Scrapers”, painted in 1875, was deemed by the jurors of the Salon de Paris to be too vulgar to be exhibited in its 1875 edition. Both the choice of its topic (working class men scraping the floor of a bourgeois apartment, half naked but not glorified as deities) and its representation in an “odd” perspective that showed mainly the floor of the room, were the reasons argued for its rejection. Caillebotte finally presented the work, along with an 1876 version of the same subject, in the second exhibition of the Impressionists held one year later.

TWITTER UNITS (6 Images): in 1637, Rene Descartes published a method to locate a point in space within an imaginary grid of X-Y-Z orthographic coordinates; his invention revolutionized mathematics and created a link between Euclidian geometry and algebra. This system of Cartesian Coordinates was implemented by Thomas Jefferson at a regional level with his Land Survey Ordinance of 1785. The Ordinance served to locate and measure rural and urban real estate in the new American territories – a system which replaced the old quilt of metes-and-bounds with the impeccable scientific rationality of the enlightenment. Before Descartes, and with a few exceptions, the pre-enlightenment man used his body, or his sensual perceptions, as the most reliable structure of measurement. In the post-digital era, the length of a digital message is restricted to no more than 280 characters – known as a tweet (equivalent to approximately 24 inches). But, could a tweet be used as a unit of regional measurement? If so, what would be its equivalents in the English and Metric systems? Felix Vallotton, Femme se coiffant, 1900
.
Felix Vallotton’s turn of century paintings portray everyday moments in interior scenes infused with bright colours. Vallotton was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut, and his paintings often show an influence of that technique with the simplification of shapes and the use of highly contrasted shades.

iRobot, Roomba i7+, 2018
.
In 2018, American company iRobot presented its latest Roomba model: a vacuum cleaner that is able to create a map of your home as it is cleaning it.
.
As a form of surveying the domestic space, the method used by the Roomba sensors is more similar to how the NASA robots are exploring and documenting the surface of Mars than the way in which architecture has been traditionally measured in a more linear manner. The resulting plans, visible to the users via an especially made app, do not show the construction of its architecture or its rooms clearly defined, but rather the empty floor space, walls and furniture removed.
.
The announcement of this new model raised many concerns about privacy and consent. By turning on the machine, users are legally agreeing to share their home information with iRobot, which stores it securely in their own servers, accessible to authorized personnel. By linking it to the company’s app, users can connect their Roomba to smart home devices, thus granting access to the data to third-party companies.
.
Colin Angle, chief executive of iRobot Corp, declared: “There’s an entire ecosystem of things and services that the smart home can deliver once you have a rich map of the home that the user has allowed to be shared”. Stock share prices for the company have soared in the last year, prompting many to question whether the company is more interested in collecting data than dirt. And while it is too soon to know what the company can potentially do with all the information it is storing, the fact is that at some point of some cloud there is a virtual map with the floor plan layouts of millions of homes around the globe.

Philippe Weissbecker, La chambre jaune, La chambre grise, La chambre bleue, La chambre verte, 2013
.
Philippe Weisbecker studied Decorative Arts in Paris, was a graphic designer in Tunisia, later moved to New York where he worked as an interior designer for some time, before starting to get commissions to do illustrations for magazines and newspapers such as Esquire, The New York Times or The Village Voice. While doing his own uncommissioned work, he was first attracted to painting, but in the late 1990s he went back to pencils, rulers, paper, and the pleasure of drawing. He has created a very particular style of seemingly rigid straight lines that create distorted perspectives filled with simple colours.
.
A summer spent with her aunt, an antiques dealer, as a teenager made him want to become a decorator, instead of going for a career in science as he had always intended to. Weekends spent in local antique shops and rural homes in Pennsylvania during the eighties brought him the discovery of the simple furniture of Early American settlers, made with anything available at hand and with a great economy of means. Inspired by this discoveries Weisbecker has extensively studied, drawn, and built furniture in the last few decades, and his work reveals a fascination with the construction of everyday objects, with how things are made.

Greta Alfaro, In Ictu Oculi, 2009
.
In Ictu Oculi (“in the blink of an eye”) is a work made up of two parts. The first is a series of photographs of the before and the after of a carefully set banquet in the middle of nowhere. In the first pictures, a dinner table loaded with food and wine and a set of old chairs surrounding it seems to be expecting the arrival of guests for a special occasion, despite the cold and uninviting surroundings. The last pictures show the destructed aftermath, with chairs broken, bottles fallen, and the rests of the food here and there.
.
The second part of the work is a video, filmed from a fixed, central point of view that recalls classical paintings, particularly the ones depicting the Last Supper. The video shows what happened in the artist’s absence: a savage feast for vultures that is tantalizing to watch for the similitudes and differences that it establishes with human’s behaviour.

Johann David Steingruber, Architektonisches Alphabeth, 1773
.
The appointed architect of the state of Middle Franconia during a prosperous and expansive epoch, Steingruber built many public buildings in a style influenced by the French baroque, including churches, schools, town halls, and hospitals. Among the few books he wrote theorizing on type and style, the Architektonisches Alphabeth stands out for its originality and ambition. In it, Steingruber imagines buildings shaped after the restrictive forms of letters, and projects them not only in plan, but also in elevation.
.
In the January 2019 issue of Casabella, the article “Abecedari Architettonici” includes a reference to this project. The author, Sergio Polano, writes about it:
.
“The result of many years of effort, his Architektonisches Alphabeth is a deft attempt to regulate the arbitrary character of alphabetical forms, under the aegis of an experimental agudeza. Steingruber outlines an orderly, logical composition of spaces inside the contours of the letters, in buildings for different purposes: princely residences, palace chapels, a monastery and a mountain castle. Each plate also shows an elevation, projected from the lower side of the letter.”
.
If you have access to the magazine, the whole article is worth the read.

Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, 6 Ainslie Place, 1920s
.
Scottish painter F.C.B. Cadell studied in Paris in the turn of the century and lived in Munich for a few years before returning to Edinburgh. During those years he came in contact with the pictorial avant-gardes that defined European art and was particularly fascinated with impressionism and fauvism. During the early 1910s, his work was defined by landscapes painted in creamy colours, but after the war his compositions “became more geometric, his paint application more controlled and his colours increasingly acidic… all shadow and volume is suppressed to create a hard-edged pattern of colour which embodies the Art Deco style” (A. Strang).
.
In the 1920s he produced a series of tightly framed compositions, boldly coloured, depicting the rooms and things at his home in 6 Ainslie Place: its black shiny floor, its walls painted in lavender, and its colourful pieces of furniture, with a particularly iconic red-lacquered chair often finding its place as a bright focal point, a repeated presence that unifies the ensemble.

HOUSE 0319 (Axonometric) 3/5: If we attain a sense of the relative value of things, we end up needing fewer things. The composition of this rural courtyard house is based on the attainment of a few legible volumes along a circular corridor. Our current civilization has become a limitless multiplication of unnecessary necessities when, in fact, the essence of the good life is not in the multiplication of wants but in their deliberate and voluntary renunciation. In the tradition of the “Hacienda Type”, this courtyard house is placed in the most anonymous place of the “pradera”. Although the original landscape is violated with the presence of the house, its placement does not hurt but enriches the whole context in its purest existence. The line of smoke of the Temazcal (a traditional Mexican sauna building) establishes the presence of a new rural settlement – a potential beginning for a new town © Jaime Correa, 2019 #architecture #rationalarchitecture #koozarch #archdaily #dezeen #critday #architizer #lovesdomus #the_best_new_architects #next_top_architects #nextarch #theopenworkshop #architectanddesign #domusweb #artnexuscorp #portoacademy #aseriesofrooms #abitare_magazine #house #c_a_g_e #modern.architect #designmilk #allmodern #malapartecafe #airesmateus #minimalisthouse

Daniel Grataloup, Sculpture Habitable, 1972
.
In the early 70s, Swiss architect Daniel Grataloup imagined a neighbourhood made out towers that he called "Habitat Urbain". Spaceship-like prefabricated modules in different sizes and for different needs were projected to be attached to a central structure containing stairs and elevators.
.
The futuristic modules were conceived under the most advanced technological possibilities available at the moment. Their interiors discarded the canonical stereotypes of the domestic space and favoured an unconventional organicist layout that mixed complex robotics and integrated furniture within curved rooms with round windows.
.
His project of a "Sculpture Habitable" in Anières, built a few years later, reformulates the formal research of Habitat Urbain, transforming it into a detached suburban house. With its more traditional materiality and down-to-earth setting, the interior of the house feels more primitive than avant-garde. It resembles more a cave carved into a mountain than a modern spaceship.

Mary Ellen Solt, Moonshot Sonnet, 1964
.
Concrete poet Mary Ellen Solt composed this poem from “reformatted diagrammatic-codes initially used by NASA-engineers to plan and execute the moon landing. The engineers placed the diagrammatic-codes over photographs of the lunar surface, and Solt abstracted the diagrams without any photographic reference. Using the codes, she transformed the result into a sonnet, with the codes appearing in “exactly fourteen “lines” with five “accents, a Petrarchan or Italianate sonnet”.
.
Welsh art critic Gareth Leaman wrote about it: “Though ostensibly a sonnet, Solt’s work does not initially seem to resemble the form – or even poetry – in any traditional sense, largely in that it does not have any linguistic content, and instead comprises an appropriation of ‘symbols (“accents”) superimposed by scientists to mark off the lunar surface.’ However, a more nuanced analysis would reveal that the work’s lack of linguistic content is the very means through which it can convey meaning. As such, the poem still has a communicative function despite containing no semantic content. The use of the word ‘symbols’ in the commentary is not inconsequential: they are indeed symbolic, in that they signify something beyond themselves. The symbols of which the work is constructed are thus a form of ‘pseudo-language’: it is not anti-language or a non-language; rather it functions as if it were a language. (...) The moon had relinquished its romantic aura to become a scientific object. The twentieth-century poet cannot address the moon as Sir Philip Sidney did in 1582."
.
And so this is not, as one might have thought at first sight, the floor plan of a series of equally sized rooms put together in a grid, connected in enfilade. The fact that it resembles just that reflects the giant leap that abstraction as a mode of representation took during the 20th century.
